Oyster Gatherers - Then & Now, entered into competition in the Cornwall Film Festival, epitomizes all that is right about the slow food movement, and all that is wrong with globalization and the grinding commodification of the fishing industry. The film, with its audio of reminiscing oystermen and traditional sea songs, shows oysters being gathered from the Fal River by Chris Ranger using methods that haven’t really changed for 500 years; a traditional wooden working boat Alf Smythers, powered only by sail and as Ranger drifts he uses a hand dredge to gather the precious bivalves from the seabed. The film shows a beautiful Cornish day, but with the season running from 1st October and closing on the 31st March, it is the weather, as well as time and tide, that collude against the oysterman in his search. The film saves its final surprise to last, as the romanticism and nostalgia that clouds the Cornish fishing industry is placed in check by the value of the days catch – a heartbreaking coda to a revelatory short film.”

The company behind a luxury yacht marina development in Cornwall has been ordered to pay more than £600,000 after lying about dredging toxic sediment and dumping it in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The deception was only spotted when an inspector from the Marine Fisheries Agency (MFA) visited the site and saw a digger at the wharves lowering a bucket into the water and shifting the silt.
The method was captured on video tape and condemned by Natural England as "the worst possible way" of moving toxic sediment around.
