Breaking News - BBC's non story...
According to Dr Andrew Wadge, the FSA's chief scientist, the research has NOT identified any new food safety risk. What is the point in publishing the story!
"If you are someone who enjoys eating raw oysters and you want to continue there is nothing here to say that you are at more risk or less risk. What we do say is that there is some risk." STOP THE PRESS....
One theory is that the purification process used by oyster manufacturers is less effective when there is less sunshine because it relies on ultra-violet radiation from the sun killing sea-borne infection. RUBBISH... I have strict controls and assessments to prove I operate my purification centre according to CEFAS guidelines and I use 2 x 25 watt UV lamps and DO NOT rely on sunshine.
David Jarrad, director of the Shelfish Association of Great Britain said: "Just because we know about it [norovirus] does not mean that we should be frightened by it. The more important and meaningful figure, in our view, is that low levels of the virus were found in 52% of the positive samples."
My advice to anyone who buys oysters and becomes ill, is to complain to the government or the water board associated with the merchant, the only unknown in my entire process from gathering the wild natives from the estuary to dispatch to you is the quality of the water. Port Health and South West Water notify me of any high levels of pollution in the river, but like most sciences is all post reactive, no one can tell me before the discharge.
I bring you what I believe are the cleanest freshest wild natives and I have had only three reports of dodgy stomachs out of 40,000 oysters sold in three years. I was one because I drank ten shots of Bloody Oyster Mary over an evening... Can't really blame the little bivalve...
