Biggest threat to the last fleet working under sail is
the DEFRA Fishing License Changes and the planned Falmouth Marina & Cruise Liner Terminal for Falmouth Docks,
dredging 700,000 m3 (1 million tonnes) of the most toxic substance deliberately introduced into the marine environment, 24hrs
a day for 6 months...

Sarah Newton MP supports the call for EU fisheries policy reform
Friday, 13 May, 2011 Truro and Falmouth MP, Sarah Newton, yesterday spoke out in support of reforming the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy.
Addressing MPs in Parliament, Sarah Newton took the opportunity to highlight the work of the Port of Truro Oyster fishery and the way in which seafood can be caught in a sustainable way. The fishery is the last remaining commercial fishing fleet under sail in Europe with over five hundred of years of traditional fishing experience.
At the moment, the oyster working boats on the Fal measuring less than 10 metres do not have to obtain a Marine Fisheries Licence which is required by the EU for all commercial fishing boats. This exemption was won by Captain Brigden and Carrick Council back in 1993. The EU is now looking at reviewing this particular exemption which would significantly increase overhead costs for oyster fishermen.
Sarah said: “Fishermen would have to meet the substantial one-off costs of applying for a Marine Fisheries License. The cost depends on the size of the vessel, and for the average 28-foot oyster fishing boat, it would be about £4,500 in addition to other local fees. This extra overhead could put local oyster fishermen out of business.”
Sarah continued: “I will be working with DEFRA Ministers to ensure that the exemption continues which will guarantee that the last fleet under sail in Europe continues to supply oysters for generations to come.”

As you are probably aware the Maritime and Coastguard Agency has presented a “Consultation on proposals for modernising the Coastguard 2010”, to Mike Penning, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for transport.
In the proposal the existing 18 full time Coastguard stations will be reduced to 2 night time Maritime Operations Centres, which will coordinate Search and Rescue (SAR), throughout the whole of the UK, with the addition of a station at Dover controlling radar in the Dover straights. The MOC for the south of the UK will be in the Portsmouth/Southampton area, with the loss of any local knowledge of this area.
It is believed that under the proposals the Coastguard may no longer listen to the VHF Distress channel, Channel 16.
